Houston, We Have Low AI Etiquette Standards

We have a problem.

I love the latest AI advancements. It’s fun to generate images, video, and automate mundane tasks. It’s important for me to state this up front because I’m not an AI hater. I look forward to it curing diseases and allowing me to go on a permanent vacation.

However, the problem is that all of the popular AI services were trained, in part, using copyrighted data. Then, as if that wasn’t egregious enough, social media platforms are starting to train their in-house AI using your personal data.

Sometimes you can opt out. But, due to social media’s track record of doing whatever they want with our data, I have a hard time fully trusting any opt out setting.

There’s not a ton we can do about this right now. Your data is being or will be used in AI training and systems. Likely no matter how careful you are.

There is one thing (besides checking privacy settings) you can do to push back a little.

Spend less time at the large social media platforms and more time discovering small/niche website communities and forums. Especially any that confirm that they don’t use AI. Or, they confirm that they don’t do anything with your data.
